PCI Lays Off 20 In Csiszar Restructuring
By Arthur D. Postal, Washington Bureau Chief
NU Online News Service, Jan 19, 10:06 a.m. EST, Washington? The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America has laid off 20 of its 140 employees under a restructuring ordered by its new chief executive, Ernest Csiszar.[@@]
The reduced headcount and restructuring are the first changes since the Alliance of American Insurers and the National Association of Independent Insurers merged into the PCI a year ago. In anticipation of that merger there had been layoffs at the Alliance.
Mr. Csiszar assumed his job in October 2004 after serving as president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners for approximately 10 months, and as South Carolina insurance commissioner for six years.
Sixteen of the layoffs were in the trade group's headquarters at Des Plaines, Ill, a suburb of Chicago, and four in Washington, according to Joseph Annotti, vice president of public affairs for PCI. No top administrators were involved, Mr. Annotti said.
Mr. Csiszar said that, "In the merger of any two organizations there will be some duplication," adding that "one of the benefits of a merger is a consolidation of operations and a reduction of expenses. After studying the association's
organization structure for the past three months, we identified those areas where duplication existed and made the necessary?yet very difficult?decision to reduce our overall staff count."
