Markel Names Whitt CFO

NU Online News Service, Jan. 13, 11:35 a.m. EST?Specialty insurer Markel Corporation said the company's chief financial officer Darrell Martin will step down from his post at the Glen Allen, Va.-based firm effective May 23.[@@]

Mr. Martin will be succeeded by Richard Whitt, who most recently served as chief administrative officer of Markel International in London. Mr. Whitt first joined Markel in 1991 in the corporate finance department.

The company said Mr. Martin, after handing over his CFO post, will continue to work on a reduced-time basis at Markel as executive vice president.

Markel Corporation markets and underwrites specialty insurance products and programs for a variety of niche markets. Markel's main units are Essex (excess and surplus lines), Shand Morahan (excess & surplus, professional and products liability), Markel Insurance (specialty program insurance), and Investors Underwriting Managers (excess and surplus, brokered). Markel International provides specialty insurance internationally, primarily in the U.K.
