Jason Keck, president of underwritingJOBS.com., said the number of visits to his company's Web site?which recently reached the number-one ranking on Yahoo! for the search term "underwriting,"?was aided by the growth in the underwriting field.

Since its creation in 1999, underwritingJOBS.com has served as a national database of underwriting positions within the insurance and financial services industry at companies such as Marsh, Pacific Life, Washington Mutual, Banner Life and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Companies post job listings, and underwriters visit the Web site to see the types of opportunities their professional skills are a match for. "You can definitely see the growth in the job market with the number of postings being added daily by employers and the numbers of people searching," Mr. Keck said.

In recent years, he said, the job market stayed stagnant and had partial to minimal growth as opposed to recently.

Mr. Keck said the reason for the recent growth was that "companies were looking for more underwriters in all fields of insurance, from life insurance to health insurance to property and casualty."

Low interest rates on loans, Mr. Keck said, plus the resurgence in mortgages played an important role in the numbers of jobs now available. "Mortgages need to be underwritten and with the low interest rates, many more people are applying for homes leading to a need for more underwriters." Mr. Keck did not have exact numbers on new hirings, but said that he expects it to continue.
