Liberty Mutual To Close 280 Worker Facility

NU Online News Service, Jan. 23, 2:34 p.m. EST?Liberty Mutual Insurance Company said it will close its offices in Oak Brook, Ill., and move most of the 280 jobs there to other facilities.[@@]

"This is a facility that we acquired last year through our acquisition of Prudential's personal lines property-casualty business. This was a facility that was not on the Liberty Mutual platform," said Glenn Greenberg, a spokesman at the Boston-based Liberty Mutual. "This is primarily an underwriting and production facility that served former Prudential customers. So as these customers roll over, as their policies renew to Liberty Mutual, their policies will be renewed through Liberty Mutual facilities," Mr. Greenberg said.

Most of the 280 positions at the Oak Brook facility are being consolidated into other similar facilities in other parts of the country, Mr. Greenberg added.

Of the 280 Oak Brook positions, 170 are part of an underwriting and production center. Those jobs will consolidate into three locations: Gainesville, Ga.; Portsmouth, N.H.; and Williamsport, Pa.

Additionally, the 40 Oak Brook positions in customer-service call center operations will consolidate into three locations: Mishawaka, Ind.; New Castle, Pa.; and Phoenix. The remaining positions in Oak Brook are in field claims, and most of the employees in those jobs will transfer to offices in Naperville, Ill., which is some 10 miles away from Oak Brook.

The consolidation will begin in March and will be completed by February 2005.

Liberty Mutual is one of the largest workers' compensation insurers in the United States. The company also offers homeowners and auto insurance, retirement products, and group and individual life insurance. Other services include risk-prevention services that analyze work sites and practices for safety, consulting, and physical rehabilitation centers.
