Within the insurance industry, theres been a shift in the roleof information technology. Until recently, technology was deployed to boost efficiency and reduce operating costs. Now, its increasingly being regarded as an essential element of a carriers core business processes, with a far more central role to play: as the enabler of initiatives that are key components of the corporate strategy.

One result is its important to ensure alignment between IT and the business units IT serves. With tighter IT budgets, no one can afford technology that doesnt support the organizations overall business strategyor IT projects that run over budget. But the business units need to make sure their emerging technology needs and specific functional requirements filter up to those who can address them.
