Texas Agents To Stage Terrorism Symposium

By Mark E. Ruquet

NU Online News Service, Nov. 12, 3 :50 p.m. EST?The Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas will sponsor an all day conference this month to discuss how their industry should deal with terrorism insurance issues.

Linda Leos, executive director of IIAD, said the subject will be the feature discussion of the 14th annual All Industry Day event presented by IIAD, the Dallas Chapter of Chartered Property-Casualty Underwriters and the University of North Texas.

"This is the first attempt by the insurance industry to address TRIA (Terrorism Risk Insurance Act)," she said.

Ms. Leos noted that the TRIA act, which provides the industry with a form of reinsurance to cover losses from terrorist attacks, ends in 2005. The industry has not addressed what needs to be done once the act expires, she said.

"We want to bring awareness to both the industry and consumers," said Ms. Leos. "It is still an issue of not if, but when there is a terrorist act, what will we do when we get there."

The one day conference, titled "Confronting Terrorism, Not If, But When," will be held Nov. 25 at the Hotel Inter-Continental Dallas, in Addison, Texas.

The day's speakers will include Ernest Csiszar, South Carolina's Director of Insurance, and vice president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas; and senior executives from throughout the insurance industry.

Panel discussions will include:

? Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 implementation update.

? How are businesses assessing terrorism risk?

? Terrorism and personal lines insurance.

? Utilizing security and crisis consulting as part of a risk management strategy.

Full day registration is $125, and the afternoon session is $50. Registration is open to anyone interested in attending, said Ms. Leos.
