NU Online News Service, Nov. 4, 10:40 a.m. EST?Tennessee's commerce and insurance commissioner, Paula Flowers, has tapped Larry Knight Jr. as the state's new assistant commissioner for insurance.
Most recently, Mr. Knight served as insurance examiner-in-charge for Tennessee's Department of Commerce & Insurance. He first joined the department 10 years ago as a financial institutions examiner.
In his new role, Mr. Knight will lead a staff of 125 employees regulating the Volunteer State's insurance industry, which includes 110 domestic insurers and nearly 98,000 licensed agents, explained Tara Conner, a department spokesperson.
The position was made vacant last April when assistant insurance commissioner Everett Sinor left the department to take a new job in the private sector. Until last month, assistant commissioner of securities Daphne Smith oversaw the insurance division, in addition to supervising the securities unit, Ms. Conner said.
Commenting on his new responsibilities, Mr. Knight stated, "My goal is to provide balanced regulation and oversight of the insurance industry, and to provide more outreach and information to Tennessee's insurance consumers."
