NAMIC Preparing Online Insurer Salary Data Bank

By Daniel Hays

NU Online News Service, Aug. 7, 2:24 p.m. EDT?An insurance trade group said it hopes to have a Web site, providing comparative salary information for more than 50 industry job titles, operational by October.

In the meantime, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies in Indianapolis said it has begun an online salary survey of its property-casualty members to provide the necessary salary data.

Mike Ulmer, NAMIC vice president for information technology, said NAMIC members that participate in the survey will have access to its data for a $195 fee. Non-members will be charged a different rate.

He said the categories include, among other positions, customer service representative, actuary, adjuster, claims examiner, claims representative and claims manager.

He said the site will generate reports "once we get a critical mass" of data and NAMIC is shooting for October so companies can plan for 2004 salaries.

The salary information will be broken down by state and company size--national, small or regional.

NAMIC said Survey Research Associates of Madison, Wis., developed the
secure, Web-based service for NAMIC, which will be available year round via the Internet and replaces the traditional
once-per-year paper publication previously offered by NAMIC.

"Having year-round, immediate access to the most current salary information available will help our members attract and retain the quality employees they need," said Mr. Ulmer.

"It's important to note that we have not merely duplicated our paper survey in an online format," he added. "Gone are reporting deadlines that many HR managers found difficult to meet. Gone also is the once-per-year publication of a single report."

"Switching to our new system means that salary reports will always be dynamically generated using the most current data available."

Participants can submit position and salary data at any time, and purchase the reports when they are ready. An annual paper survey report will still be produced for those companies that do not wish to take advantage of the online service, NAMIC said.

The group said that companies wishing to participate in the NAMIC Online Salary Survey can learn more by

Direct access to the NAMIC Online Salary Survey is available at http://namic.salaries.com.
