Was the Media the Medium for the Mold Crisis? Three years ago, the few mold claims that insurers saw in Texas were handled for a few thousand dollars. Today, mold claims cost on average $35,000 and can easily exceed $100,000.

The cost per policyholder went from about $23 in Texas in the first quarter of 2000 to about $444 in 2001, and added $850 million to insurance costs.

The surge cannot be explained by changes in the weather. It cannot be explained by population growth. There is no new strain of “killer” mold. So, what is the variable?

One thing we know is that there are more than 10,000 mold-related lawsuits pending in state courts nationwide. While most of those suits were filed in states like Florida, California and Texas, big jury awards seem to be inspiring mold-related claims elsewhere.
