Software Updates Legacy Systems

By Mark E. Ruquet

NU Online News Service, March 6, 9:55 a.m. EST?New York City-based Accenture announced the development of two new software programs that it says would improve insurers' business processes and help them retire their legacy systems.

The management consulting and technology services firm said it released two new software programs: Accenture Insurance Solution and Accenture Underwriting Components. The two are designed to enhance its existing claims processing software and make business more productive and efficient for companies, according to Accenture.

David P. Hollander, managing partner of Accenture's Insurance Solution Group, said the two new software program solutions would allow companies to take their current legacy systems and integrate them into one program.

Companies would be able to integrate all or part of their current software packages under one software command. And they would be able to phase in the implementation of the program at their own rate of time. Accenture added that the process could be done in nine to 12 months.

Tasks that are currently done by a host of unrelated software systems within companies, such as product development and policy administration such as rating, billing, processing, financial reporting and other functions, could all be done by Accenture Insurance Solutions, the company said.

The Accenture Underwriting Components is a risk assessment and modeling tool carriers can incorporate to assist in underwriting decisions and routine administrative processes. Mr. Hollander said the Underwriting Component is designed to incorporate third-party data, ranging from service organizations to credit scoring and other client information, and develop a risk profile on an account.

The software packages cover all lines of insurance ranging from property-casualty to life products.

The software can be configured for many different languages and currencies, Mr. Hollander said. He noted the primary aim is currently the North America and European markets, but versions are being developed for China, India and other far East-Asian insurance interests.

This product, Mr. Hollander added, could also be of interest to third-party administrators.

The firm also announced that insurer Erie Insurance Group, based in Erie, Pa., has selected Accenture's software product for incorporation of its legacy systems under a unified software program.
