Docs Plan Med Mal Rally In Connecticut

NU Online News Service, Feb. 13, 11:19 a.m. EST?Physicians in Connecticut said they are planning a "White-Coat" rally at the State Capitol to protest soaring malpractice insurance costs.
The March 26 event in Hartford, Conn., is scheduled to coincide with the annual "Doctors' Day at the Capitol," organized by the Connecticut State Medical Society.
Many doctors who attend the rally are expected to skip work that day to attend the event, "but it's not to be confused with a work stoppage or a strike," said Tim Norbeck, executive director of the Connecticut State Medical Society.
Mr. Norbeck termed the malpractice insurance situation "an acute crisis." He explained the rally is being organized by the Connecticut State Medical Society with help from county medical associations.
Usually, the annual "Doctors' Day at the Capitol" attracts a hundred or so doctors to the capitol who then get a chance to speak with legislators on various issues. But this year, "this is a life-and-death struggle," Mr. Norbeck said.
"The urgency is such that what the legislature does will decide whether doctors can stay in practice. We have gotten the word out and we are encouraging doctors to come to the rally. I am hoping to get about 1,000 doctors in white coats in the rally," he said.
