Governance A Topic At Next CICA Confab

By Caroline McDonald

NU Online News Service, Nov. 12, 11:42 a.m. EST?Corporate governance, market drivers and fronting by primary carriers will be the focus of a captive insurers group meeting next year, an executive of the organization said.

Carl Modecki, president of the Captive Insurance Companies Association, made his comments with the announcement that CICA is accepting reservations for its 2003 International Conference, March 9-11 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Modecki said a new session on corporate governance as it affects captives will be a key issue up for discussion.

"As always," he said, conference topics will center on "what's driving the market at the time, whether it's reinsurance or fronting." Additionally, he said, results of CICA's annual fronting survey will be announced.

Another continuing focus of the conference is networking, Modecki said. "I think a lot of the talk and discussion ongoing will be the continuing changes in the insurance market, particularly as a result of 9/11 [2001]."

He continued that there is "a lot of action" going on with domiciles, which will be addressed at the conference by domicile regulators.

The event is attended by hundreds of representatives of captive insurers and risk retention groups, as well as risk managers and insurance buyers wishing to learn about captives and other forms of alternative insurance, the Minneapolis-based CICA said.

Conference education sessions will include topics such as legislation, taxes in the United States and offshore, maximizing the use of a captive, U.S. business conditions, and an "Ask the Experts" session, CICA said.

Also included at the event will be captive and risk retention owner roundtables.

A full agenda, with online registration, is available at http://www.captiveassociation.com/2003Conference.htm. The association said conference lodgings can be arranged on the Web site as well.
