NAMIC Delayed Awards Presented

NU Online News Service, Sept. 20, 11:28 a.m. EST?National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies has presented its annual service awards including those from last year that were not presented because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The NAMIC 2001 convention was cancelled after the attacks. The Indiana-based organization's 107th annual meeting was held this year San Diego.

NAMIC said the awards are given to individuals who make significant contributions to their own companies and to the national and state insurance industries.

The Service Award winners for 2001 were:

? Mark E. Bishoff, former president of Farmers Union Co-Operative Insurance Company of Nebraska, Omaha. He was cited for participating as a presenter in many state and national programs and for his service as president of the Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Cos. Mr. Bishoff was also a past chairman of NAMIC's Multilines Conference and of the NAMIC Merit Society.

? Julie Buchmeier, secretary, treasurer and manager of German Mutual Insurance Association, Auburn, Neb., who has served as a board member and president of the Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Cos. A frequent presenter at NAMIC meetings, she also serves on the NAMIC Farm Conference Board, chairs the Farm Mutual Conference Technology Committee, and is a member of both NAMIC's Convention Planning Committee and the Merit Society.

? Glen Johnson, president of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association, Cambridge, Ontario, who has been president of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association for more than 12 years. He is also a trustee of OMIA's pension plan, has served on NAMIC's board, and is a member of the Advisory Council.

? L. Wayne Johnson, secretary-manager of Clay County Mutual Insurance Co., Clay Center, Neb., who has been an active member of NAMIC's Merit Society and served as 2001 chairman. Mr. Johnson serves on the NAMIC Advisory Council and Convention Planning Committee, and is also secretary-treasurer of the Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Cos.

Recipients of the 2002 awards were:

? Robert L. Harrison, chairman of Indiana Lumbermens Insurance Co., Indianapolis, and retired chairman of the Insurance Education Foundation. He served as NAMIC's chairman in 1994. NAMIC said that Mr. Harrison "effectively represented the association before Congress and dramatically strengthened the financial status of the Insurance Education Foundation as its president."

? Bruce N. Heaton, president of Frontier Mutual Insurance Co., Lincoln, Ill., who was NAMIC's 1989 chairman as well as chairman of the Illinois Association of Mutual Insurance Cos. He also served as NAMIC's treasurer for eight years and was an active member of NAMIC's Finance, Convention Planning and Executive Committees and the IEF Board.

? Duane D. Smith, secretary-manager of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Johnson and Shelby Counties, Franklin, Ind., is chairman of the Farm Mutual Conference. He is a member of the NAMIC Claims Committee and the Farm Forum Editorial Advisory Committee. He is also Immediate Past President and a board member of the Mutual Insurance Companies Association of Indiana (MICAI), and served on its Farm Mutual Law Review Task Force.

? Daniel E. Stone, president and chief executive officer of Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., Indianapolis. He is past chairman of the Property Casualty Conference and a member of the NAMIC Convention Planning Committee. A frequent NAMIC presenter, Mr. Stone is also active in MICAI, chairing its Audit Committee. He is also vice chairman of the Insurance Institute of Indiana.
