PIA To Lobby The ?Hill' Thursday

NU Online News Service, March 11, 11:50 a.m. EST?The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents is holding its annual Federal Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C. this week.

The lobbying effort, which includes a political action committee dinner, is due to begin Thursday and feature a keynote address by Rep. Richard H. Baker, R-La., chairman of the House Financial Services subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government-Sponsored Enterprises

Mr. Baker is scheduled to deliver his remarks at the Capitol Hill Club during the summit's breakfast and briefing.

PIA, based in Alexandria, Va., stages the annual summit gathering so members from across the nation can meet and lobby their elected representatives in their Washington, D.C. offices.

PIA said among some of the legislative topics of concern to agents are proposals for the optional federal chartering of insurance companies introduced by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. and Rep. John J. LaFalce, D-N.Y.

The association said it opposes federal chartering and supports functional state regulation of insurance.

PIA said it supports a national standards proposal for insurance regulation that strikes a balance between the need for national uniformity in standards, and the demands of emerging multi-state markets.

PIA is also urging members to speak to their lawmakers about enacting a terrorism insurance backstop to provide market stability in the event of another attack similar to 9/11.
