Top 20 Groups Intact, But Positions Shift

If you had taken a picture of the National Underwriter ranking of the top 20 property-casualty insurance groups for 1999, it would look very similar to a comparable snapshot for 2000. Indeed, the exact same groups make up the top 20 in both years–only some of the positions have changed.

The top 20 list is based on net written premium volume reported to the Kansas City, Mo.-based National Association of Insurance Commissioners for 2000.

Only one major acquisition impacted the group ranking for 2000–a $31.1 billion deal by Citigroup that brought p-c insurers in the Associates First Capital Corp. group under the Travelers Insurance umbrella. With the acquired companies adding $817 million to the total, Travelers moved into sixth place, ahead of seventh-ranked Nationwide.
