Anita Hill Challenges EPL Insurers

Anita Hill, whose name became a household word during the Senate confirmation hearings on the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court, has some advice for employment practices liability underwriters–practice what you preach.

She observed that EPL insurers readily inform their policyholders what to do to improve the workplace and reduce sexual and racial discrimination claims. She then challenged the insurers to apply the same practices and procedures to themselves, starting “at the top” with their boards of directors.

Ms. Hill focused on workplace discrimination issues in her remarks as guest speaker at the Professional Liability Underwriting Society’s recent Insurance Issues Symposium in New York. Ms. Hill, an attorney, is now professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University in Walton, Mass.
