Ten amicus curiae briefs have been filed to offer the court points of view on the significance of the issue.
The explosion, caused by a 2,000-gallon propylene tank, killed three people and caused property damage as far away as a half-mile.
A key issue raised had to do with whether damages were consequential or direct — something not well defined in Texas caselaw.
Although the judgment affects three insurers, only Lloyd's is required to pay for now. Baylor is appealing rulings involving the other companies.
The suit alleges USAA improperly takes title to vehicles it considers unrepairable, without knowledge or consent of the owner.
