Risk Management Hall of Fame

The professional risk management society, RIMS,and American International Group, Inc. (AIG) today announcedBerry Griffin, Jr. as the 2018 inductee intothe Risk ManagementHall of Fame (RMHF).

'Immense contributions'

The RMHF serves as a means to maintain the history of the fieldof risk management and recognizes risk practitioners who have madesignificant contributions to advancing the discipline. Griffin wasofficially inducted at RIMS 2018 Annual Conference & Exhibition in SanAntonio.

“RIMS stands as the premier risk management association in theworld and has grown its network to over 10,000 professionalsbecause of individuals like Berry Griffin, Jr.,” said RIMS CEO MaryRoth. “Dedicated, passionate and genuinely invested indemonstrating the value of risk management, Berry's contributionscontinue to drive conversation and evolve risk practices. It is anhonor to induct this long-standing RIMS leader into the RiskManagement Hall of Fame.”

Career spanned more than 30 years

Berry Griffin, Jr.'s risk management career spanned more than 30years and he remains active in the profession, attending RIMSAnnual Conferences & Exhibition each year.

Berry served as the Risk and Insurance Manager for both BakerInternational and Hughes Aircraft where he was highly regarded forhis contributions.

Berry made immense contributions to the national andinternational risk management profession through his volunteerwork. He was a leader of the American Society of Insurance Managers(ASIM was the association's name prior to becoming RIMS). He heldall officer positions with ASIM, successfully completing manyprojects, committee assignments and speaking opportunities on arange of risk management topics.

Force behind industry's first Cost of Risk Survey

In 1979, he was elected to President of the Risk and InsuranceManagement Society, Inc. Under his leadership, Berry and the teamof risk management professionals who served on RIMS Board ofDirectors produced the first Cost of Risk Survey. Berry's team wasable to capture this important data and deliver a valuable resourcethat is still offered by RIMS today as RIMS Benchmark Survey.

Berry also helped the Society maintained its position as one ofthe most highly-regarded advocacy groups representing the risk andinsurance manager. During his tenure, RIMS routinely testified infront of Congress, met with IRS leaders and weighed in on theregulation of captives to support risk professionals' bestinterests.

He represented RIMS on the National Association of InsuranceCommissioners' Model Competitive Rating Bill Industry AdvisoryCommittee and played an important role in its report. His valuedrecommendations were effective in pushing for workers' compensationto be competitively rated.

Berry oversaw RIMS' participation in global events includinghelping the U.S. Council Insurance Committee of the InternationalChamber of Commerce coordinate its international summit on riskmanagement in Paris in 1979. He was instrumental in supporting thegrowth of risk management forums in Europe, Australia, Japan andLatin America.

Active in Southern California risk community

He was active in the Southern Californian risk managementcommunity, eventually serving as the president of RIMS Los AngelesChapter. He was also instrumental in the formation of at leasteight RIMS chapters including: RIMS Canadian Capital, Puerto Rico,Central Illinois, Arkansas, Salt Lake City, Potomac, San Diego andWestern Carolina chapters.

Berry cares tremendously about mentoring, acting as a mentor androle model for countless risk management professionals. A keycontributor to the development of the Spencer EducationalFoundation, he continues to support the Foundation's cause tocreate meaningful opportunities for the next generation of riskmanagement professionals.
