Reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter & Co. says it has received approval from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission to open a new branch office in Shanghai, China.

The new branch will be headed up by Phil Xue.

Guy Carpenter says the opening is part of its efforts to build a strong presence in China.

Earlier in the year, Guy Carpenter says it expanded its leadership team in China by appointing Hong Guo, as deputy chief executive officer, and Vienna Cheung, as chief operating officer, of the firm's China operations.

Guy Carpenter is a member of the financial services firm Marsh & McLennan Companies, which also owns the insurance brokerage firm Marsh.
