The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) published a bulletin reminding policyholders of the protections provided by previous emergency orders on Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The orders protect policyholders affected by the hurricane and apply to all insurers, HMOs, premium finance companies, surplus lines insurers, and other entities regulated by the OIR.
Between September 26, 2024, and December 10, 2024, insurers cannot cancel or non-renew a policy covering property in one of the affected counties, unless the policyholder requests. Any notice of cancellation issued or mailed 10 days before September 26, 2024, should be withdrawn and reissued after December 10, 2024.
If affected policyholders receive a notice of nonrenewal or cancellation that will take place from September 26 through December 10, they should contact OIR directly. They should email relevant documents to OIR at [email protected].
OIR’s market regulation units are monitoring the marketplace for violations. If an insurer is found in violation of Florida law or the emergency orders, OIR can impose penalties, require restitution to consumers, and require corrective action.
