The South Carolina Department of Insurance published a bulletin on the requirements for the use of emergency adjusters following Tropical Storm Helene. Hurricane Helene entered Florida as a category 4 hurricane but was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it entered South Carolina.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on September 25, 2024, in anticipation of the storm. Per South Carolina regulations, during a catastrophe when there are not enough licensed adjusters or motor vehicle physical damage appraisers, non-resident adjusters or motor vehicle physical damage appraisers can be brought in to adjust losses while not licensed in South Carolina. They should, however, be able to provide proof they are licensed in their home state. They can only operate in South Carolina for a period of time necessary to assist in catastrophe-related claims.

This will be in effect for 120 days from the date of the bulletin (September 30, 2024). The forms and procedures to be a temporary non-resident adjuster can be found at www.doi.sc.gov/emergencyadjuster
