It is peak boating season in Connecticut, which typically runs from May to October. The Connecticut Insurance Department published a notice informing consumers of a potential premium discount for motorboat owners used for recreational purposes.

The Department cites CT Gen Stat § 38a-684 which states that any insurer who issues a policy in Connecticut that provides coverage for a motorboat used for recreational purposes and is powered by a motor of at least 5 horsepower must allow a rate credit when the principal operator submits proof of completion of a safe boat handling course. The course must be approved by the Commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection. The credit awarded should not be less than 5 percent of the premium.

To take advantage of this discount, consumers should contact their insurance provider and ask about the premium discount for completing a safe boat handling course. Once an approved course is completed, the insured should submit the required documentation to the insurer. The insurer will verify the successful completion and eligibility and apply a rate credit.
