The Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance published a bulletin advising insurers on the requirements of 20 CSR 500-1.100 (3) Standard Fire Policies of the Missouri Administrative Code. Item three deals with cancellation requirements of standard fire policies.

20 CSR 500-1.100 (3) states that any cancellation, nonrenewal, reduction in amount, or adverse modification of a policy issued on or after July 1, 2024, must include the following:

  • The reason for cancellation, nonrenewal, reduction in amount, or adverse modification
  • That the insured can contact their insurance producer or any producer for coverage
  • The producer's name, address, and telephone number
  • The name, address, telephone number, and website of the Missouri Property Insurance Placement Facility (Missouri FAIR Plan)
  • That any excess premium paid must be refunded within 30 days of the notice of cancellation

A producer's name is required if a producer was used in the initial sale of the policy and continues to service the policy. If the policy is no longer served by a producer, if the producer is no longer receiving commissions on renewals, or if the producer is no longer employed with the insurer at the time of cancellation, then the notice does not need to include the name of a producer but should include a contact number for the insurer that the policyholder can call for information.

The Code includes a model notice insurers may use and adjust as they see fit: Exhibit A The bulletin can be found here.
