Starting in 2021, a video on social media showing how easily certain models of Kia and Hyundais could be stolen became wildly popular, as did thefts of those vehicles. By 2023 the thefts were significant enough that the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, and the International Association of Special Investigative Units sent a letter to TouTube requesting that the videos be removed from the site as they were generating an increase in thefts of the vehicles.

The DC Department advises consumers that the department has regulations prohibiting unfair actions of insurers providing coverage in the District of Columbia.
