In light of Hurricane Ian, the South Carolina Department of Insurance has issued a bulletin advising that the licensing of temporary non-resident adjusters and motor vehicle physical damage appraisers may be necessary. This determination is effective immediately and will continue for 60 days from today, September 29, the date of issuance of this bulletin, and may be extended if the Department deems it necessary. A copy of the bulletin can be found here.
The procedures for emergency adjusters and step-by-step instructions for applying for a permit can be found here. Those non-resident individuals applying as emergency adjusters must be licensed as adjusters or motor vehicle physical damage adjusters in their home state. Non-resident adjusters are to remain in the State only for the time to assist in the catastrophe adjustments or appraisals.
Emergency permits for non-South Carolina licensed adjusters must be obtained by the insurer. Non-South Carolina licensed individuals and other businesses cannot directly obtain an emergency permit. If you have been issued a permit please contact the insurer you are working with for a copy of the permit.
