As a result of severe weather, on January 3 the governor of Alaska issued a disaster declaration as a result of severe winter storms for certain areas. In response to that declaration, the insurance department issued a bulletin  advising all insurers to allow at least 2-week grace period to insureds for payment of premiums. The department reminded insurers to respond promptly to communications from insureds and to reasonably investigate all claims before issuing a denial.

The department reminded insurers about Bulletin 18-17 which discusses dominant cause of loss and the fact that an insurer may not deny a claim if the dominant cause of loss is insured against but an excluded risk is also involved in the chain of perils causing damages on a secondary basis.

A copy of the department's bulletin can be found here.
