Homeowners Fraud – Idaho

Caught before claim paid

A man bought a house in 2016 and had it insured. In 2018 the insured submitted a claim saying the roof had been installed improperly and that the roof had been damaged by branches and other debris by a strong windstorm. He submitted digital images with the claim. The metadata of the images showed that they had been created in 2008, 2013, and 2016. The claim was denied and referred to the Idaho Department of Insurance for investigation. The insured claimed a shady roofer named Bill took the pictures, but the insured could not provide a phone number, last name, or company name to investigators. Insurance fraud is a felony punishable by up to fifteen years and a $15,000 fine.
