Fraud of the Week
Auto Fraud – Florida
$45,000 potential
The head of the management company for Flagler Beach Golf Course in Florida has been charged with filing a false police report and insurance fraud for reporting the theft of a skid steer. The vehicle was reported stolen in September but in January a representative from NICB contacted authorities with information from a dealer in Canada wondering why it was reported stolen when the rightful owner had it in his possession. An affidavit from the dealer states that the man who reported the vehicle stolen had never owned it – even though he had insured it – although it had not been insured for theft. Around the same time he reported a $25,000 Rolex watch stolen from his residence, but an insurance company representative called police with concerns because the insured had a history of making insurance claims for stolen property.
The man was featured on an episode of Fugitive Friday Bingo; authorities were given a tip as to where the man was but no one answered the door when they went to the house. The man turned himself in the next day.
