Fraud of the Week

July 22, 2019

Arson — Maine

Amount: $264,000

A Massachusetts man has been charged in connection with a fire that destroyed his second home in Maine in early 2017. The fraudster faces four counts of insurance deception and one charge of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, all charges stemming from the same fire which destroyed the home, and from an insurance claim of water damages to the home from frozen pipes and the theft of an ATV from the property the year before the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the fraudster purchased the home for $84,000 three years before the fire, and received $350,000 from the insurance company. Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
