Fraud of the Week
July 15, 2019
Arson — North Carolina
Amount: Unknown
A North Carolina woman is accused of setting fires at her home and her parents’ home. Strangely, the State Bureau of Investigation has been investigating five other fires that occurred at her residence in the past eleven years. Specifically interesting to the investigators, was a rash of three fires during a two-week span in 2007. The first fire occurred on November 26, 2007 when someone left the oven on sparking a fire on top of the range. That fire was deemed to be an accident. On December 2, 2007, less than a week later, a second fire started in a dryer. Investigators could not determine a cause. The third fire occurred on December 10, 2007, and burned the house to the ground. The county officials reported this activity to the State Bureau of Investigators, who now think that the fire was intentionally set. Charges have yet to be filed. The next fire occurred in September 2012, when a fire erupted in the basement and garage in the early hours of the morning. That fire had three origins, two in the garage and one in the basement, and vehicles at the home had been vandalized. Investigators believed these fires had also been intentionally set. The last fire occurred on July 3, 2018, when fires ignited in a front bedroom, an adjacent bedroom, and in the basement. That fire sparked charges of second-degree arson and insurance fraud. Finally, the fraudsters parent’s home caught fire on May 23, 2019 and was the sixth fire occurring at a place where the fraudster was living.
