Liability Fraud — Florida
Amount: Unknown
Several inmates in a jail in the Florida Panhandle have faked being poisoned by drinking cleaning chemicals resulting in severe illness and bodily injury as an attempted insurance scam. The scam began when an inmate accidentally spilled some cleaning solution during a roof repair. The liquid mixed with water and drained from a gutter onto the ground of the rec area where seven inmates began to complain of reactions to the chemicals. The inmates were taken inside, and the ones who suffered reactions were all allowed to shower. The inmates discussed the amount of insurance payout they would receive for their injuries, while they were waiting for their medical examinations. One of the members of the scam was caught on surveillance video stating “Us right here in this room is gonna get paid” while other members of the scam took turns rubbing themselves down with cleaning chemicals poured out of a Mountain Dew bottle. Some members of the scam even drank the cleaning solution. Four of the seven admitted to placing the cleaning solution on their bodies in order to file a claim for insurance proceeds with the county.
