In September, the California Insurance Department issued a cease and desist order to the NRA, alleging that the NRA marketed insurance in California without being licensed to do so. Selling insurance without a license is always a no-no. The cease and desist order stated that the NRA sent emails to members advertising the policy and providing coverage details. The insurance department considers such activity operating without a license, and that the NRA is in violation of state regulations by doing so.

This afternoon the department announced that the NRA has agreed to stop soliciting insurance without a license, and has made significant changes to its website and member communications as was required in the Cease and Desist Order. The NRA website can only contain a banner ad for a broker selling the coverage and may only provide information on the non-insurance benefits of the program.
