False Claim Fraud — California
Amount: Unknown
A California woman is accused of prohibited activities and sanctions after filing a false insurance complaint for bodily injury. The fraudster filed an insurance claim for an injury sustained in a car accident, however, she was not in the vehicle when it was involved in the accident. Her boyfriend allegedly used her car to drive a friend home. Another car then backed into her vehicle in a parking lot. The boyfriend and two passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. At the scene, the responding officers were informed that information had been exchanged and everything had gone smoothly. The fraudster soon visited the police department and requested a crash report to complete for insurance purposes. When completed, the form listed four occupants of the car and showed the fraudster claiming a back injury. Soon later the insurer received a letter of representation from a law firm stating it was representing four people in the vehicle for bodily injury claims. The insurance company denied the claim but offered a $1,500 settlement for each of the occupants of the vehicle. Multiple people say she was not in the car when the wreck happened.
