Washington Workers' Compensation and Healthcare Fraud – $400,000 Mar 18, 2019
A mother and foster-daughter duo has been charged with first-degree theft and identity theft in connection with an insurance fraud investigation by Washington's Insurance Commissioner, Mike Kriedler's Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU). The investigation revealed that the duo received more than $400,000 from AFLAC after filing several fraudulent claims between 2012 and 2015. The false claims involved unnecessary surgeries, hospital stays, and medical treatments, and reached across Washington state, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana. Several of the treatments resulted from faked injuries that also necessitated short-term disability claims. Examples of the fraudulent claims include broken bones after car and ATV accidents, cysts, and pneumonia. The duo will appear in Clark County Superior Court on March 26th.
