A Scranton, New York* man conspired to burn down his own home with his brother in an insurance scam. During the fire, the brother suffered fatal burns. The man and his brother poured gasoline inside the home as an accelerant. The police believe the brother got gasoline on his clothing and his clothing caught fire causing severe burns. The brother was later found dead in his apartment. A Scranton city firefighter was injured in the blaze as well. He tore a part of his forearm that had to be surgically reattached. He has not yet regained full mobility. The man's Defense Attorney believes that if he knew that people would be injured and killed in the fire, they would not have gone through with the scam. The man was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison, and after release will have to do 20 years of probation.
