Fraud of the Week

September 24, 2018

Arson — Missouri

Amount: Over $260,000

In October of 2015, a Missouri woman, and co-owner of a nail salon called LN Nails and Spa, placed a heat source over eight gallons of flammable acetone and rubbing alcohol that she had purchased earlier that day. She was the last one out of the shop that evening. Within minutes the fire spread up and out through the first and second floors of the three story brick building. Two firefighters were killed when a brick wall collapsed, and two others were severely and permanently injured.

The woman had previously set two fires in two other nail salons, and collected $260,000 in insurance payouts. The payout amounts were low enough that she assumed they would not be investigated, which was true until the tragedy struck, killing two firefighters in the blaze she set in October 2015. With this being her 3rd intentional fire, prosecutors referred to her as a serial arsonist.

She was found guilty this week on charges of second-degree murder, assault and arson, and will serve a combined 74 years in prison serving consecutive sentences.
