An Idaho man has been sentenced for his role in a scheme to set his friend's car on fire for the insurance money. The 20 year old was arrested after he and a friend reported that the friend's car had caught fire. Firefighters who responded to the scene said that the car was burning too hot and the fire was spreading too fast for the fire to be natural. The pair were arrested and later admitted to setting the car on fire for insurance money. The defendant said he had been intimidated by his friend into going along with the plot. The friend stated that he and the defendant discussed several options on how to get the insurance money on the car, and they decided that they should burn it. The police question whether or not the defendant actually was intimidated to participate in something he didn't want to do. Because he had past burglary charges and probation violations, the judge did not consider probation but placed the defendant in a rider program. (A rider program offers intensive counseling and education to lower risk inmates, and are shorter than normal prison sentences). If he succeeds in the program, the judge will reconsider probation. The friend is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
