Fraud of the Week
March 26, 2018
Life Insurance Fraud—Oklahoma
Amount: $500,000
This week, after several rounds of investigation, a man has been charged with murder in the first degree with deliberate intent for allegedly killing his father after taking out a $500,000 life insurance policy on him. In 2012, the accused called 911 to report that his father had shot himself. He reported that his father had been cleaning the shotgun at the time of the accident and then became agitated and started talking “crazy talk” and shot himself in the abdomen. During an interview with police the accused said his father had either $250,000 or $500,000 worth of life insurance, and he was a joint beneficiary for the life insurance policy along with his sister. Investigators found that accused was the sole beneficiary, and that he was the one paying the premium on the policy. After completing the investigation, police concluded that the accused took out the policy on his father, then shot and killed his father with the shotgun, and finally staged the scene to make it appear to be a suicide.
