Workers Comp Fraud—Massachusetts
Amount: $2,000
A trolley driver for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority allegedly staged being attacked while working on the Mattapan trolley line in 2016. He is now facing criminal charges for fraudulently collecting workers' compensation and private disability insurance. A grand jury indicted him on two counts of insurance fraud, misleading a police investigation, and perjury following an investigation by Transit Police and prosecutors. Allegedly, the fraudster paid someone $2,000 to beat him up while the trolley was stopped on October 30, 2016. The assailant wore a Michael Myers mask from the movie series “Halloween” and can be seen on video running from the station.
The attackers fingerprint was found on the scene, and when questioned, he told the police that he had been paid $2,000 to attack the fraudster. These claims were corroborated by bank and phone records. The fraudster obtained workers compensation payments and long-term disability payments based on a claim that he suffered post-traumatic stress from the incident he had orchestrated. Some of the documents signed during the process constitute perjury. The driver is still recovering from the injuries that he paid someone $2,000 to inflict upon him.
