False Claim Fraud—Colorado
Amount: Up to $100,000
A former Colorado police officer was sentenced this week to spend forty-five days in the county jail for felony insurance fraud. In order to avoid a five-year prison sentence, he must comply with terms of a five-year probation including 100 hours of public service and financial restitution of more than $70,000. He plead guilty to felony insurance fraud and theft of up to $100,000. The charges were brought after three fraudulent insurance claims from 2010 to 2015. Two of those claims stemmed from home burglaries and one from a claim that his wife's car had been broken into. Items claimed stolen included jewelry, a passport, and a safe. The State prosecutor said that his role as a police officer makes his crimes even more egregious, as it undermines law enforcement when members become dishonest and corrupt.
