Arson—Nevada

Amount: Unknown

A Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer had his position terminated after he was charged with arson and insurance fraud. In early 2016 firefighters responded to an RV burning in the middle of a Las Vegas highway. The RV was not attached to a vehicle, and it was owned by an LA police officer. Fire investigators swiftly determined that the fire was intentionally lit. Soon after, the fraudster showed up on the scene of the arson and spoke to another officer who was directing traffic. That second officer's dash cam recorded the conversation. Soon after, the local Fire Department stated it had enough evidence to prove that the officer intentionally lit his own RV on fire with gasoline and a roll of papers. Investigators also say they caught the officer lying to his insurance company about the extent of the damage. Investigators sought to review the video taken by the dash cam, but that segment of the video in which the officer arrives on the scene of the arson had disappeared. The officer's position has been terminated, and the criminal case ended in a mistrial because of the missing dash cam video. Since the first trial, videos that the judge and jury did not view have been uncovered.
