Workers Compensation Fraud—New York
Amount: $3,000
A man employed as an aide for a state youth detention center pleaded guilty this week too fifth-degree insurance fraud for stealing from the state Workers Compensation system. The Inspector General's Office executed an investigation of the aide after he reported suffering a debilitating knee injury at work. He stated that the injury prevented him from working. Over the next three months, the aide received over $3,000 in benefits to which he was not entitled. The investigation revealed that during the time he claimed he was unable to work, he was playing ice hockey in numerous games for an amateur hockey team called the Tighty Whities.
