Staged Crash Fraud—Florida

Amount: Unknown

A Florida man staged a crash, filed an insurance claim, and blamed the other driver without knowing that the other driver had a dash cam. The Florida man initially attempted to get a tow truck to rear end him by break-checking the tow truck. When that plan did not result in an accident, the fraudster backed his car into the tow truck and filed an insurance claim blaming the tow truck driver. The tow trucks dash cam clearly depicts the man stopping abruptly for no apparent reason – with nothing on the road in front of him. When that attempt did not result in a crash, the fraudster drove forward a few feet, put his car into reverse, and slammed into the tow truck. The man told police that he was hit from behind by the tow truck when he had to come to a swift stop because the vehicle in front of him stopped suddenly; a story completely refuted by the dash cam. When he went to a medical clinic three days later, he stated that he had been hit by a tow truck while stopped at a red light and signed a personal injury claim form affirming that story.

The fraudster now faces charges for insurance fraud and participation in an intentional crash.
