Auto Fraud—New Jersey

Amount: up to $60,000

Two men in Jersey City have plead guilty for their individual roles in a luxury car insurance fraud scheme in 2016. Accusations filed by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office allege that the defendants purchased a 2011 Porsche Panamera from a salvage yard and somehow generated fraudulent registration for the car. The car was never repaired. One defendant then reported a claim to his Geico agent, claiming that the car was damaged in a crash in New York. After the claim was made, the defendants did not withdraw the claim; instead, they stopped pursuing the claim before the police were involved. A 2011 Porsche Panamera can be worth up to $60,000. The defendants are scheduled for sentencing on April 20, 2017.
