Go-Pro Auto Fraud—Arizona
Amount: $61,000
An Arizona man pled guilty to insurance fraud as a Class 6 undesignated offense after wrecking his 2012 Corvette Stingray during a drag racing event and claiming the loss occurred while exiting the freeway.
The claim specifically alleged that he crashed his Stingray on an exit ramp at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler Arizona. Geico paid out the $61,465 claim for the loss of the Corvette. It was later discovered that the crash had occurred during a drag race at a drag racing event at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park that the defendant was participating in, driving his Corvette. The insured lost control of his vehicle during the drag race and crashed into a concrete barrier, totaling his car. The crash was recorded on a Go-Pro video recorder and subsequently published on YouTube. The policy, like most other personal auto policies, does not cover damage caused to the insured vehicle while involved in a drag race. The insured was shown the video footage and admitted to making the false claim to his insurer.
Last week he pled guilty to Insurance Fraud and paid the entire amount of restitution back to Geico Insurance, and was sentenced to two years of probation and $1,500 in court costs.
