 The following chart provides information on insurance discounts for drivers over fifty-five years old and licensing requirements for each state.

Alaska

Mail renewal not available to people 69 and older.

Fifty-five and over and requests reduction, has no chargeable accidents in the last three years, and has completed accident prevention course approved by statute. Discount applies for three years.

Arizona

Renewal every five years for people 65 and over. Mail renewal requires passage of vision exam within the prior three months.

Mail renewal not available to people 70 and older.

Fifty-five and older and has successfully completed approved driver improvement course within last three years. Class must include classroom and field driving.

Arkansas

 

None.

Fifty-five and older and successfully completed approved accident prevention course. Discount applies for three years.

California

 

At age 70, mail renewal is prohibited. Doctors required to report diagnosis of dementia.

Fifty-five and older and successfully completed mature driver improvement course provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Discount good for three years.

Colorado

 

Renewal every five years for people 61 and older. People 66 and older cannot renew electronically, but they can renew by mail if a licensed physician or optometrist certifies that they passed a vision exam given within the prior six months.

Fifty-five and older and takes approved drivers education course. Discount applies for three years.

Connecticut

 

Choice of two- or six-year renewal for people 65 and over. Mail renewal requires demonstration of hardship.

Sixty or older and has submitted proof of successful completion of a four-hour accident prevention course approved by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for two years.

Delaware

 

 

If all drivers of a vehicle complete an approved course, you receive 10 percent off a portion of your auto insurance for three years. If you take a refresher course within 90 days of the end of the three-year period, you receive a 15 percent discount.

D.C.

V and M=70

At age 70, or nearest renewal date thereafter, a reaction test may be required; applicant must provide a statement from a practicing physician certifying the applicant to be physically and mentally competent to drive.

Fifty-five or older who have successfully completed an approved course. Discount applies for two years.

Florida

V=80

Vision test administered at any driver's license office or if applying by mail or electronically a vision test must be administered by a licensed physician or optometrist. Drivers age 80 and over must renew license every six years.

Fifty-five and over and has completed accident prevent course approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for three years.

Georgia

 V = 64

Vision test for drivers 64 and older; cannot renew via mail. Renewal every five years for people 60 and over.

Discounts available for completion of approved class as long as all drivers in household have completed a course and for other criteria.

Hawaii

R,K,M-for cause

Age 72 and above must renew license every two years.

None.

Idaho

 

Age 63 and above must have a four-year license rather than an eight-year license.

Fifty-five or older and has completed accident prevention course that meets criteria established by the transportation department. Discount applies for three years.

Illinois

R=75

License expires every two years for drivers 81 to 86. License expires every year for drivers 87 or older.

Fifty-five or older and has completed accident prevention course that meets or exceeds the standards of the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course's eight-hour classroom instruction program. Discount applies for three years.

Indiana

M-retest for cause

Mail-in renewals prohibited at age 70. License expires every three years for drivers 75 or older; expires every two years for drivers 85 or older.

Iowa

 

License expires every two years for those over 70.

None.

Kansas

 

License expires every four years for drivers 65 or older.

Discount for driver of any age that completes approved course. Discount applies for three years.

Kentucky

 

None.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed a motor vehicle accident prevention course meeting standards set by the Transportation Cabinet. Discount applies for three to five years.

Louisiana

 

Mail renewal not available to people 70 and older.

Discount available to any age for completion of approved class as long as all drivers in household have completed a course. Discount applies for three years. Discount for those 55 or older who have completed approved class as long as all drivers are 55+ and have completed course. A rate reduction up to 10 percent shall be authorized by the commission.

Maine

V=40, 62

Vision test required at first renewal after driver's 40th birthday and at every second renewal until age 62; thereafter, at every renewal. Drivers 65 or older renew license every four years.

Fifty-five or older and completes motor vehicle accident prevention course approved by the Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Highway Safety. Discount applies for three years.

Maryland

V=All, M- for cause

Vision test required for all drivers age 40 and over.

Fifty-five or older and completed within the past two years a motor vehicle accident prevention course approved by the Motor Vehicle Administration. Includes classroom instruction or driving practice for required number of hours, and participant has received certificate of completion.

Massachusetts

 

Drivers 75 and older must renew in person.

Rates for those 65 or older who qualify for the lowest rate classification receive a discount.

Michigan

 

None.

Fifty or older and successfully completes a traffic accident prevention course that an automobile insurer determines meets the criteria defined in the insurance code. Discount applies for three years.

Minnesota

 V=All

All renewals include vision screen regardless of age. Age alone not sufficient reason for reexamination. Doctors must report physical conditions that might impair driving skills.

Fifty-five or older and completed required accident prevention course. Discount applies for three years.

Mississippi

 

None.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed motor vehicle accident prevention course approved by the Department of Public Safety. Discount applies for three years.

Missouri

 

Age 70 and over receive three-year licenses rather than the usual six-year.

None.

Montana

 

Licenses expire every four years for those 75 or older.

Fifty-five or older who has successfully completed a highway traffic safety program as outlined in the code.

Nebraska

 

Age 72 and over must renew in person.

None.

Nevada

 

Mail renewal must include medical report for people age 70 and over.

Fifty-five or older and completes a traffic safety course approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for three years.

New Hampshire

R = 75

New Jersey

Discount for driver of any age that completes approved defensive-driving course. Discount applies for three years.

New Mexico

 

License Must be renewed annually starting at age 75.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed accident prevention course approved by the traffic safety bureau of the state highway and transportation department. Discount applies for three years.

New York

 

None.

Discount for driver of any age that completes approved course. Discount applies for three years.

North Carolina

 

Licenses expire every five years for drivers 66 and over. Drivers over 60 not required to parallel park in road test.

None.

North Dakota

 

Driver 78 and older must renew every four years.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed approved accident prevention course. Discount applies for three years.

Ohio

 

None.

Sixty or older and has successfully completed an accident prevention course that includes classroom instruction and the passing of an exam. Exam must include demonstration of the applicant's ability to control a motor vehicle. Discount applies for three years.

Oklahoma

 

Age 62 to 64 fee is reduced. Fee waived for age 65 and older.

Discount for driver of any age that completes course approved by insurance company. Discount applies for three years.

Oregon

V=50

Vision screening is required for drivers 50 and older. Doctors may report physical conditions that might impair driving skills.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed accident prevention course approved by the Department of Transportation. No drivers under 25 who regularly drive the vehicle. Discount applies for three years and to only one owned vehicle.

Pennsylvania

 

Doctors must report physical conditions that might impair driving skills. Drivers 65 and older may renew every two years.

 

All named insureds are 55 or older and have successfully completed a driver improvement course meeting the standards of the Department of Transportation. Discount applies for three years.

Rhode Island

 

License expires every two years for drivers over 75.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed an accident prevention course approved by the division of motor vehicles. Courses may be taught by AARP members who are certified or approved by the division of motor vehicles. Discount applies for two years.

South Carolina

V = 65

License expires every five years for drivers 65 and over.

Fifty-five or older and completes approved driver training course. Discount applies for three years.

South Dakota

 

None.

Twenty-five or older and completes approved driver training course. If a carrier has a separate age-related discount based on driving record, these provisions do not apply.

Tennessee

 

Fees reduced for those over 60. No expiration for age 65 and over.

Fifty-five or older and successfully completed an accident prevention course approved by the commissioner of safety. Discount applies for three years.

Texas

 

Mail or electronic renewal not available to people 79 and older. Drivers 85 and older must renew every two years.

None.

Utah

V = 65

Drivers 65 or older must furnish a current eye examination form, or have an eye exam at, the license examining office. Doctors may report physical conditions that could impair driving skills.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed an accident prevention course. Discount applies for three years.

V=75

Drivers 75 or older renewal every 5 years in person or have a vision test in person or physician report.

Fifty-five or older and have successfully completed a crash prevention course approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for three years.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed an approved accident prevention course. Discount applies for two years.

West Virginia

 

Doctors may report physical conditions that might impair driving skills.

Principal operator and spouse are 55 or older and have successfully completed an accident prevention course approved by the Division of Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for three years.

Wisconsin

Wyoming

 

None.

Fifty-five or older and has successfully completed an accident prevention course approved by the Division of Motor Vehicles. Discount applies for two years.
