Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) to extend the filing deadline for Louisiana policyholders impacted by the recent flooding in the state – and it has done so.

FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (“NFIP”) requires homeowners to file a proof of loss to claim damages within 60 days of a flood. Commissioner Donelon asked FEMA to extend the deadline to 120 days from loss, which it agreed to.

“In light of the widespread flooding and the complete devastation that some families and businesses are dealing with, filing the proof of loss form can be an additional challenge in an already stressful time. It is especially difficult for those previously affected by the March storms that are now suffering a second loss,” said Commissioner Donelon. “FEMA granted us an extension after the flooding in March and I am asking for a similar courtesy after the flooding in August. Anything we can do to help ease the burden of those rebuilding their homes and lives is needed at this time.”
