Team USA's medals from Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be insured by Liberty Mutual Insurance.

The U.S. Olympic Committee worked with Liberty Mutual to insure each gold, silver, or bronze medal won by U.S. Olympic and paralympic athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games (in addition to those who participated in the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games for Team USA).

“Liberty Mutual Insurance is in the business of helping our customers worry less as they face life's inevitable challenges,” said Melanie Foley, the Liberty Mutual Insurance executive vice president and chief talent and enterprise services officer. “For Team USA athletes, a medal is the ultimate reward for their hard work and training, and they deserve to have peace of mind that should anything happen to it, there is someone standing with them.”

Team USA is hoping to repeat its position atop the Olympic and Paralympic Games medal table in Rio, and will strive to best the 374 total medals awarded to Team USA at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The process to replace a lost or stolen Olympic or Paralympic medal requires the athlete to file a request through the U.S. Olympic Committee. Through this insurance policy with the U.S. Olympic Committee, Liberty Mutual Insurance will ensure that 2016 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes are not financially responsible to replace their treasured prizes, just as the company is doing for members of Team USA who earned medals in Sochi, Liberty Mutual said in a statement.
