Lawrence Schreiber, a 30-year veteran of the health insurance industry, has been named president of Empire BlueCross BlueShield.

Mr. Schreiber succeeds Brian Griffin, who was appointed president of Anthem, Inc.'s commercial and specialty business division in September. Empire is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anthem.

In this role, Mr. Schreiber will be responsible for managing the plan's small and large group and individual business, including sales, provider relations and contracting, care management, underwriting, product delivery, and regulatory and customer relationships. In addition, he will oversee Empire's long term strategic direction and work with elected officials and thought leaders to improve the health of New Yorkers.

Born and raised in Nyack, New York, Mr. Schreiber comes to Empire from his current position as president of the Anthem BlueCross and BlueShield Plan in Wisconsin. During his nearly seven-year tenure, the plan saw significant membership and financial growth, and was recognized by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as the fastest growing Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan in 2010.

“Empire has provided quality, affordable health insurance to New Yorkers for over 80 years,” said Mr. Schreiber. “It's an honor to be asked to lead this company, and I look forward to finding even better ways for Empire to focus on delivering a more personalized health care experience for our members and health care consumers.”

He will be based out of Empire's Manhattan headquarters and officially begins on December 28.
