Staged Accident—New Jersey
AMOUNT: $25,000+
A New Jersey man and his girlfriend were charged with second-degree insurance fraud, second-degree conspiracy, third-degree attempted theft by deception, and third-degree tampering with public records or information for actions in staging an accident and resultant filing of claims. The two each filed twenty-eight claims to Liberty Mutual for approximately $25,100 for medical treatments. The girlfriend admitted that the accident was staged; the car was purchased six weeks before the accident, premium payments were made from a designated checking account, and she was told the vehicle was going to be in an accident and that she would need to go to doctors and should get a lawyer in order to get potential funds from a lawsuit for injuries from the accident.
